This setup of a film introduces us to some great characters and plot points that will be the focus of future films without giving much away here, which was a nice touch. We meet Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) as he travels from England to the USA to set a beast of a bird free in Arizona, but because Scamander is a bumbling, clumsy young man, he loses his literal briefcase full of beasts in New York City. In other words, before Harry Potter became the Boy Who Lived, this whole fantastical tale took place. Instead of modern day London or Hogwarts, Fantastic Beasts takes place in 1920s New York, which is around the same time that King Kong would have been climbing buildings.
